WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- When we think of health issues, we always blame our bad choice of foods including sweets, fatty, and processed foods.
- These types of foods cause inflammation in our body which can lead to acne, heart problems, Alzheimer’s, and cancer, Alzheimer’s.
- But there are foods we thought are “innocent” that can also cause too much inflammation in our body.
American physician Nicholas Perricone, M.D., a pioneering nutritionist and dermatologist wrote several books on anti-inflammation eating, aging, and weight loss.
He said that our bodies depend on temporary inflammation to combat infection. But when inflammation becomes chronic or long-term, “the immune system mistakenly attacks normal cells, and the process that ordinarily heals becomes destructive.”
We always blame the obvious offenders like sugar, alcohol, and trans-fat-filled fried foods. But there are foods which appear to be innocent that can cause inflammation in your body. Here are six of them:
They say it’s a natural sweetener. But agave, with a fructose content of up to 90 percent, still has full of sugar.
“Sugar suppresses the activity of our white blood cells, which makes us more susceptible to infectious disease (colds, the flu, and so forth) as well as cancer,” Dr. Perricone said.
Barley and Rye
These are healthy grains but they can trigger inflammation in some people because of gluten. If you’re sensitive to gluten, allergic to it, or if you have Celiac disease, consuming barley or rye, in food or booze form, should be avoided.
This delicious treat has two potential inflammatory offenders: sugar and dairy. Milk can trigger inflammatory reactions due to allergens.
“Some frozen yogurts contain the milk protein casein, which may increase inflammation,” Dr. Andrew Weil, an anti-inflammatory crusader explains.
“Others contain specific probiotics that may actually reduce it.” (And some frozen “yogurts,” the director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the College of Medicine added.
Peanuts, like milk, are a common allergen that causes a broad inflammatory response in the body. They are also prone to molds and fungus, which can also lead to inflammatory reactions.
We love readily-available seasoning mixes. But according to Melissa Wood, a nutritional health coach at The Morrison Center in New York City, they often contain sugar and artificial coloring that can interrupt hormone function and cause inflammation.
Known as “wheat meat,” seitan is made of wheat gluten. And gluten “can trigger the immune system, causing inflammation in the intestinal tract,” explains Wood.
It can cause constipation or even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for some people.
