WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Singer Demi Lovato was rushed to a hospital on Tuesday after friends found her unconscious at her home.
- The pop star apparently overdosed and was revived with Narcan before paramedics arrived.
- Lovato has struggled with substance abuse for years and revealed just a few weeks ago that she had suffered a relapse.
New details are emerging about what truly happened before Demi Lovato was hospitalized due to an apparent overdose. The singer was found unresponsive on Tuesday in her Los Angeles home. Her family and friends had suspected that Lovato was partying the night before with people who were encouraging her drug habit, a source told Entertainment Tonight.
“Entertainment Tonight” co-host Kevin Frazier reported that the source also said the pop star was dating a guy her family doesn’t approve of.
The 25-year-old singer was given Narcan, an emergency medication that can reverse the effects of a narcotic overdose after she was found unresponsive.
“I think it was very wise for her friends, or family, or whoever it was to have Narcan on hand. They probably saved her life,” Dr. Laurence Westreich, an addiction psychiatrist, said.
During a concert in California on Sunday, Lovato forgot the lyrics to her song “Sober” and walked off stage.
The singer admitted she relapsed after six years of being sober. She’s been in rehab twice before, the first time when she was 18.
The ET source said that Lovato’s family is now focused on providing a clean, safe place for the pop star to heal. They also plan on getting her straight into rehab.
“The important thing is to keep hope alive. To try another modality of treatment, to try another medication, to try a psychotherapy… To try to get better,” Dr. Westreich said.
In 2016, Lovato opened up about her addiction as well as her family difficulties and depression when she guested in “CBS Sunday Morning.”
“Every time I go through something painful, I kind of just, I look up at the sky and I just go okay, I don’t know why you’re putting me through this, but there’s a reason, help me figure it out,” Lovato said.
The singer’s Thursday night concert in Atlantic City was canceled.
This is the chorus of her ballad, “Sober”: “Mama, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore/And Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor. To the ones who never left me/We’ve been down this road before/I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.”
