WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- An unnamed Twitter employee was hailed internet hero after deactivating Donald Trump’s account on his last day at the job.
- Twitter users who searched for the president’s account encountered a familiar page that pops up when you look for a nonexistent account.
- For 11 minutes, the Twitter world was Trump-free and the internet went crazy with assorted reactions to what took place.
Americans are used to the president using Twitter to post everything. From the state of the nation to his personal life, to his rants and praises, and to squabbling with other nations’ leaders.
That’s why it was really surprising to many to find Twitter Trump-free. Some even thought that the social media platform has finally heeded the clamor of some to take down his social media account.
President Donald Trump’s social media account — @realDonaldTrump — was not on Twitter.
In September, the social media company reiterated that it will not be taking down Trump’s Twitter account. When Trump’s account resurfaced, explanation on what occurred began to surface.
The Twitter Government account initially suggested that it was an accident. Further explaining that there have been other cases like that wherein human error was to blame.
“Earlier today @realdonaldtrump’s account was inadvertently deactivated due to human error by a Twitter employee. The account was down for 11 minutes, and has since been restored. We are continuing to investigate and are taking steps to prevent this from happening again,” the tweet read.
The Twitter Government’s next tweet about the issue gave a clearer explanation.
“Through our investigation, we have learned that this was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee’s last day. We are conducting a full internal review.”
The still unidentified former Twitter employee became an internet sensation, some even calling him/her a hero after shutting down Trump’s account.
