Sophia Daugherty of New Castle, Pennsylvania died on Wednesday after going into a diabetic coma during a sleepover at a friend’s house. The 10-year-old girl who suffered from Type 1 diabetes was found unresponsive on Sunday morning.
WPXI.com reported that Daugherty was rushed to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh where doctors found her with brain trauma and a herniated brain stem. The fifth-grader from Laurel Elementary suffered a sudden drop in blood sugar at some point during the sleepover, according to her family.
A GoFundMe campaign for her medical needs was launched by family members on Monday. Its first update was a message of appreciation for an overwhelming support the family is getting.
On the page’s second update posted late Thursday, they announced that the young girl died on Wednesday.
“We lost sweet Sophia,” it read. “She went home to heaven on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at 3:44 pm. She was surrounded by her family and friends. She no longer suffers from this disease. Your prayers and support are priceless.”
The superintendent of Laurel School District, Len Rich, said the class was in shock when they heard what happened.
“She was a popular little girl. The most commonly used adjective was ‘sweet’ — sweet Sophia. She’s going to be sorely missed,” Rich told WPXI.com.
The data from the American Diabetes Association reveal that about 1.25 million Americans suffer from type 1 diabetes, with about 40,000 new cases diagnosed per year. Managing the disease requires insulin therapy.
Sophie had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes three-and-a-half years earlier, as reported by the New Castle News.
Her family said they planned to donate Sophia’s organs, with her services planned for the weekend.
