Police are praising a young girl’s survival instincts that may have saved her baby brother’s life after their parents’ murder-suicide.
The siblings’ parents — David Kooros Parsa, 46, and Mihoko Koike, 38 — were found dead from gunshots wounds in the bedroom of their home in Chatsworth, California on April 14, according to the Associated Press.
It is presumed that Parsa has shot his wife while she was lying in bed before shooting himself, the Los Angeles Police Department reports. The couple’s two children, a 3-year-old girl and a 2-month old boy, were found unharmed at the scene.
Authorities believed that the little girl managed to take care of her baby brother and herself for “several days” after their parents’ deaths.
“Our little angel was able to keep herself and her brother alive,” LAPD Capt. Maureen Ryan told the press. “The baby is a miracle baby and the little girl is a hero. She’s an absolute hero.”
Neighbors Olivia and James Robinson became concerned after police conducted an initial welfare check at the house early on April 14, according to KCBS.
Initially, investigators found nothing suspicious at the residence during the check, which was performed at the request of another family member.
The Robinsons said they heard Parsa and Koike arguing on the night of April 10. They went to the home hours after the welfare check. They found the 3-year-old girl “in bad condition,” KTLA reports.
“She reeked really bad of urine and she had more of a blank stare on her face,” Olivia told the media outlet. “She was very, very quiet.”
When James Robinson asked where her parents were, he said the young girl told him “they’re upstairs and they’re hurt.”
