A 5-year-old girl miraculously survived after her distraught dad jumped in front of a subway car while carrying her.
Fernando Balbuena, 45, had reportedly said the words, “With God, with God, with God, here comes the train,” before making the jump.
Niurka Caraballo, 41, revealed her husband’s chilling last words in Spanish: “Con dios, con dios, con dios que alli viene el tren.”
Caraballo was in their Grand Concourse home when she heard these words in a phone call on Monday morning. She rushed to the nearby Kingsbridge Road station, but it was too late.
She shared on Tuesday in Spanish that the witnesses thought “he was fighting with someone on the phone, but the only person he was on the phone with was me.”
At around 8 a.m., Balbuena jumped into the path of a southbound No. 4 train — while carrying 5-year-old Ferni in his arms.
Balbuena passed away, but his daughter survived without any injury. She managed to crawl along the trackbed, where a good Samaritan reached out to her and rescued her.
Ferni was physically fine, but her mother shares that their child has yet to process what had happened. Caraballo shared that Ferni still kept asking for her dad, and believed that he might still go home.
Caraballo said, “Ferni was very close to him. After what happened, she is saying, ‘Daddy is in the hospital. He hurt his stomach.’”
Now, both Ferni and her 2-year-old brother, Fernand, will be forced to grow up without their father.
Balbuena was reportedly battling depression. But Caraballo said that the suicide still came as a shock because he had been on medication.
She shared, “My husband is a serious man, responsible, quiet and reserved. He was in treatment, he took his medication. We are all in shock.”
The mother expressed her hope that her young child won’t carry the traumatic memory: “It is going to be a process, her living through that.”
Ferni’s near-death experience has filled Caraballo with gratitude for every day they spend together.
“They are calling her the miracle girl. My daughter was reborn yesterday,” she shared.
