WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- An Arizona man was arrested last week after his 6-year-old son died during an act of ‘exorcism,’ according to a criminal complaint.
- Pablo Martinez told investigators that he attempted an exorcism on the little boy because the child “was demonic and had a demon inside of him.”
- He told the police that he poured hot water down his son’s throat to “cast out the demon” after he witnessed the boy have an “unnatural fit of rage.”
A 6-year-old Arizona boy died after his father tried to exorcise a demon from him Thursday, according to a federal complaint. Pablo Martinez who lived on the Pascua Yaqui Indian Reservation near Tucson was arrested and is in custody.
Police and fire officials from the Pascua Yaqui tribe arrived at the Martinez’ home on the reservation on Thursday after receiving a call about a child who was burned. FBI officials also arrived at the scene.
Martinez and Romelia Martinez, the boy’s adoptive mother, were outside the home when the police arrived. It’s not yet determined if the Martinezes are married.
Pablo Martinez told investigators the boy had been acting demonic, to which the mother was in agreement. He added that he “needed to save him” and so he poured hot water down his throat, according to the complaint.
Romelia told detectives that her husband offered to give the boy and their other child a bath. When she heard gurgling coming from the bathroom, she opened the door and saw Pablo holding the boy underneath the faucet in the bathtub, the complaint read.
The mother said she yelled at Pablo to stop but he told her that “he had to do it.” She then called 911 after a pastor she tried to call did not answer. Romelia told the dispatcher that at that time her husband was attempting CPR and poured cold water on the 6-year-old.
Pablo Martinez told investigators he poured hot water down the boy’s throat to try to “cast out the demon” after he witnessed the boy have an “unnatural fit of rage.” He said the child was under the water for five to 10 minutes, the complaint states. The other child eventually left the bathroom in tears, NBC News reported.
Pablo Martinez was arrested for a first-degree murder charge.
The boy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The child had burn marks on 15 percent of his body, including his head, elbows, and forearms, according to the court documents.
