WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A 61-year-old mother became a gestational surrogate for her son Matthew and his husband Elliot’s first baby; after nine months, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl on March 25.
- Prior to the procedure, Cecille Eledge had to undergo a long process including tests for doctors to ensure that she can be a candidate for carrying the embryo.
- Finally, doctors gave their approval; an egg was taken from Elliot’s sister and the sperm from her son Matthew.
Cecile Eledge, 61, from Nebraska undertook a special journey so her son and his could have a baby they could call their own. On March 25, she gave birth to her own granddaughter.
According to a press release by Nebraska Medical Center, Elledge served as a gestational surrogate for her son, Matthew, and his husband, Elliot Dougherty. There was never a moment of hesitation for Cecille who said it was just purely natural instinct.
The family went through an extensive process of determining whether Eledge can carry the embryo. Due to her age, she first underwent a series of tests before doctors gave her the thumbs up. The egg was donated by Dougherty’s sister while Matthew Eledge donated his sperm.
After nine months, Eledge gave birth to her own granddaughter — a healthy baby girl who weighed 5 pounds and 13 ounces, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The couple, who was in the room when Eledge gave birth, beamed with joy as they met their daughter whom they named Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge, for the first time.
“We are thankful with how the whole process worked. We are really grateful that both Uma and her grandma are happy and healthy. For the time being, we’re just going to relax and enjoy this moment,” said Matthew Eledge.
Matthew also added heaped praises to the entire team of doctors, nurses and lab techs for showing their utmost professionalism and compassion.
While his team of high-risk specialists from Nebraska Medicine’s Maternal Fetal Medicine usually administer to many older patients, Dr. Ramzy Nakad said this delivery was definitely “a very exceptional case.”
When she grows up, Uma would be happy to know that her whole family did everything they can to bring her into this world. Thanks to a mom who wanted to become a grandmother and her two resolute dads.

No. This is just all wrong. The world has gone crazy. Poor kid.
I feel sorry for you…….the world has gone crazy but you must be one of them! Mind your own business and let this family be happy! No one forced anyone into this and if you or your son or daughter was in the same situation what would you do!!! Mind your own business and be happy for them. Like my mama use to say, if you can’t say something nice then just keep your mouth shut and say nothing at all!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS LUCKY FAMILY AND THIS ADORABLE BABY GIRL!
