P&G ad claims women’s feet are ‘5 times’ stinkier than men’s

After launching a controversial advertisement claiming that women’s feet smell “five times worse” than men’s, Procter & Gamble caused a stir on Chinese social media. According to the South China Morning Post, the stinky commercial, which was posted on the Chinese social networking platform WeChat on March 13, was intended to advertise a line of female cosmetic goods.

“Women’s feet smell five times worse than men’s. If you don’t believe it, smell it,” reads the caption of the now-deleted infographic that contained a series of unfounded claims concerning feminine hygiene.

According to the news outlet, the sexist advertising, which has since been lambasted by critics, said that women often forego wearing socks, which turns their shoes into actual “sauna rooms,” that cause their feet to stink.  Female footsies, according to the commercial, have six times the amount of bacteria as male footsies.

P&G did not mention a specific source, but a study published in the National Library of Medicine in 2019 discovered that women’s feet had 17 cultured bacterial species, while men’s feet had 14.

Scientists, however, found the findings  “not statistically significant” in terms of cleanliness.

The ad also claimed that women’s feet have more sweat glands than men’s, which explains their apparent podiatric stench. While that is true, men sweat more easily than women in general.

According to the ad, women’s chests smell worse than men’s, their hair is twice as bad because they wash it less frequently, and their underwear is generally grubbier, even for those who pay close attention to personal hygiene.

Needless to say, P&G’s false statements did not go down well on social media.

“The advertisement is a form of mind control: humiliating women while still making money from them,” one commenter said, as reported by the Morning Post. “By the way, do these allegations have any scientific data to support them?”

Another wrote that the company’s advertisement shows it looking down on women and warned to boycott its products.


P&G is said to have apologized on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo in response to the outrage.

They wrote in Chinese: “We sincerely apologize for the article’s inappropriate content, which disrespected women. P&G always advocates equal, tolerant and respectful values.”

They went on to say that they had since removed the item and “seriously overhauled the (WeChat) account.”

In November, South Korea’s top dairy company was chastised for a commercial depicting women as cows, in a similar misogynistic advertising incident.

    Women generally ware at least two layers and many times three layers of clothing over their private areas. This reduces air circulation and promotes perspiration. So much of the female smell is a direct result of fashion. Another factor in female smell is women’s sensitivity to temperature. Women have a very narrow temperature band between cold and too hot. Even if they smell some, I feel so fortunate to have such a beautiful creature in the world!

Coffee Smile, a local cafe chain in Perm, sparked a national uproar after posters advertising the unusual new addition to their beverages started popping up around their stores.

Soon after, the chain’s owner, Maxim Kobelev, released a promotional video.

In the video, a young mother and breast milk supplier for the café says, “I recently went on maternity leave and saw that a lot of breast milk is required.”


“I have a lot of it. The child eats just a little, so I thought: why not earn extra money? I even made coffee with breast milk for my husband, he liked it.”

Talk about mixing business and motherhood!

Kobelev assured intrigued (and perhaps horrified) customers that the breast milk would be safely sourced, with all mothers tested for health assurance.

In the early stages, only about 40-45 breast milk-infused drinks were planned to be served.

However, they aimed to foam up the production to around 1,000 beverages by year’s end.

A drink would set you back 650 rubles, or about $8.

Once the video went viral, social media blew up like a well-steamed milk frother.

Many wondered if it was a hoax, or if Russia’s food safety authority, the Rospotrebnadzor, was going to get involved.


A local deputy even conducted a poll asking if people were game to try these unique coffee drinks.

The results were frothy: 46% said ‘never,’ while 23% admitted they were ready to give it a try.

Just as things were beginning to boil over, Kobelev revealed the truth behind the entire spectacle.

There would be no breast milk lattes.

It was, in fact, a gimmick; a marketing ploy whipped up when a breastfeeding mother appeared at a company meeting.

“We did not prepare or sell coffee with breast milk,” Kobelev clarified in a press release, likely easing a few jittery nerves.

He added that using breast milk for coffee production was illegal, a handy fact he probably should’ve brewed on earlier.

As it turns out, the scandal was a good brew for business.


Kobelev confessed that people started visiting his cafes asking for the unusual drink.

For those genuinely interested in the brew, Kobelev prepared a drink with a blend of goat and almond milk.

“The taste is very similar,” he stated, a knowledge he acquired as a father of two children.

While no actual laws were broken, this quirky news story has undoubtedly left a strong aftertaste in the public’s mouth.

At least for now, Coffee Smile has decided to stick with the usual milk options.
