WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Actor Danny Masterson, starring in The Ranch and That ’70s Show, is charged with three counts of rape involving three separate women.
- Masterson claim that these rape allegations are without merit.
- If convicted as charged, the actor faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison.
Actor Danny Masterson is charged with three counts of rape incidents between 2001 and 2003, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced on Wednesday. The actor is most popular for the roles he played in sitcoms That ’70s Show and The Ranch.
Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office detailed the charges following these rape allegations from three women in a press release. Masterson is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman between January and December 2001, and a 28-year-old woman in April of 2003. Sometime between October and December of 2003, another 23-year-old woman said that the actor raped her after inviting her into his Hollywood Hills home.
Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller of the Sex Crimes Division said that these three rape allegations took place in Masterson’s home in Hollywood Hills. The District Attorney’s Office mentioned no other information about alleged victims of sexual assault.
If convicted as charged, the actor faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison.
Masterson’s attorney, Tom Mesereau, issued a statement following these rape allegations. In a comment to the NBC News, Tom Mesereau insisted that his client will be acquitted and exonerated of all charges when “all the evidence comes to light.”
“Obviously, Mr. Masterson and his wife are in complete shock considering that these nearly 20-year old allegations are suddenly resulting in charges being filed, but they and their family are comforted knowing that ultimately the truth will come out,” Mesereau said. “The people who know Mr. Masterson know his character and know the allegations to be false.”
Masterson was fired from The Ranch in 2017. Netflix terminated their contract and has fired the actor from the television show after Los Angeles police acknowledged the investigation. There is no information whether these rape allegations are related to the charges announced on Wednesday.
“I am obviously very disappointed in Netflix’s decision to write my character off of ‘The Ranch.’ From day one, I have denied the outrageous allegations against me,” Masterson said in a statement. “Law enforcement investigated these claims more than 15 years ago and determined them to be without merit.”
Recently, a growing number of sexual assault allegations is directed towards the actor. This follows after the #MeToo movement, which encouraged sexual assault survivors to speak out against sexual harassment and misconduct.
