WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- The alleged mastermind behind the shooting of former MLB star David Ortiz was arrested in the Dominican Republic, authorities.
- Victor Hugo Gomez, the alleged mastermind of the hit, was arrested Friday but the Dominican National Police only provided very little detail about it at its official Twitter account.
- Ortiz, who was transported to a Boston hospital, is recovering and out of intensive care, his wife, Tiffany Ortiz, said in a statement issued by the Red Sox last week.
The Dominican Republic police arrested the alleged mastermind behind the shooting of former Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz on June 9 at an outdoor bar in Santo Domingo.
Suspect Victor Hugo Gomez was detained in the Caribbean country, the Dominican National Police announced Friday. No additional information was released. Last week, the authorities said they believed Gomez was living in the United States.
ABC-owned KTRK-TV, reported that Gomez is a resident of Katy, Texas, and an alleged associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel, a criminal syndicate and drug trafficking organization. Police said Gomez hired hitmen to murder his cousin whom Gomez suspected of turning him into Dominican drug investigators in 2011, the Houston-based station reported.
The hit was an apparent case of mistaken identity as officials said the hitmen confused Ortiz with Gomez’ cousin, Sixto David Fernandez. The baseball legend was sharing a table with Fernandez at the time.
Though the two dressed similarly, they have different appearances. Ortiz is one of the most recognizable athletes in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, standing at 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds. Fernandez is smaller and thinner, with a lighter complexion.
Ortiz was immediately taken to a hospital after being shot. His gallbladder and part of his intestine were removed.
Ortiz was transported to Boston and has been since released from intensive care and was listed in good condition, his wife Tiffany Ortiz said in a statement issued by the Red Sox last week.
