WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- In this year’s traditional bull-run festival in Pamplona, officials of the city reported that 5 people sustained serious injuries that required surgery after being gored by the raging bulls.
- Two Americans and three Spaniards were punctured in various parts of their bodies including the head and neck within the city’s bullring course.
- The yearly San Fermin festival which includes the running of the bulls in Pamplona, also involve bulls being killed every day during afternoon bullfights.
Following this year’s opening bull-run of the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, five people including two Americans and a Spaniard were gored and hospitalized, according to Sunday reports from officials of the northern Spanish city.
The regional government reported that a 46-year old San Francisco man required surgery after getting injured from being punctured in the neck in the city’s 850-meter course bullring.
Two other men- a 23-year-old from Florence, Kentucky and a 40-year-old Spanish man- sustained thigh injuries after being pierced. Another two Spanish men were also injured in the head.
The running of the bulls in Pamplona attracts nearly 1 million spectators yearly. For some Americans, they visit to pursue Ernest Hemingway’s footsteps, who, in his 1926 novel, “The Sun Also Rises” paid homage to the Pamplona festival.
Every morning during the nine-day San Fermin festival, six bulls are run and killed in the afternoon bullfights. “Runners” race ahead of or run next to the animals while the more cautious view the run from the balconies.
Bulls from the cattle breeders of Puerto de San Lorenzo were featured in the first run of this year’s fiesta run. As the pack raced together into the cobblestoned, barricaded street course, one of the bulls briefly stumbled. Momentarily, panic ensued resulting to one case of goring. Once the bulls resumed the race they attacked some of the racers.
According to Red Cross emergency personnel, a total of 48 people with minor injuries were treated, including two individuals who were stamped by the running bulls.
Lasting 2 minutes and 41 seconds, the run happened after “Chupinazo” on Friday, the official opening of the festival, which involved thousands of revelers showering each other with wine and champagne in an enclosed square.
