WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Ashleigh Barty announces retirement from tennis, just two months after winning the Australian Open title.
- She said that “there was just a little part of me that wasn’t quite satisfied, wasn’t quite fulfilled.”
- She believes that winning Australian Open title is the perfect way to celebrate the end of her career.
Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis on Wednesday.
“It’s hard to say, but I’m so happy, and I’m so ready, and I just know at the moment in my heart for me as a person — this is right,” in a conversation with Casey Dellacqua, which is posted on Instagram.
She has announced her retirement now while holding the World No. 1 title in women’s tennis. She performed at top shape throughout the year. She competed and ranked first in the Australian Open a couple of months ago. Six months earlier, she brought home the medal after competing at Wimbledon.
She said her Wimbledon is what led up to her decision to retire after working “so hard your whole life for one goal.”
“To be able to win Wimbledon, which was my dream — the one, true dream that I wanted in tennis — that really changed my perspective,” she said. “I just had that gut feeling after Wimbledon.”
Barty said that even after winning the competition, “there was just a little part of me that wasn’t quite satisfied, wasn’t quite fulfilled.” However, looking at things differently, she said that winning the Australian Open is “my perfect way” to celebrate her career.
“Without a doubt it was something that was new to me, new to try and wrap my head around and comprehend where we’re going to be away for such an extended period,” she said in March 2021. “Of course there were tears the days leading up. There were tears when I did finally leave, and then when we left.”
She talked about how difficult it was for her to be away from home, on multiple occasions throughout the season. She also mentioned how important it was for her to bring home a medal.
“As an Aussie, the most important part of this tournament is being able to share it with so many people,” she said after winning.
Barty has announced retiring from tennis before but mentioned that it is different this time. Back in 2014, she left the sport after winning at the junior level and to spend more time with her family. She then started playing cricket before returning to tennis back in 2016.
This might be the last time we would be seeing her participate in a tennis competition, but she said that she is looking forward to what the future holds.
“Ash Barty the person has so many dreams that she wants to chase after that don’t necessarily involve traveling the world, being away from my family, being away from my home, which is where I’ve always wanted to be,” she said Wednesday.
