A Brazilian gang leader was found dead in his jail cell after a failed attempt to escape by dressing up as his 19-year-old daughter.
According to Agence-France Presse reports, officials discovered 42-year-old Clauvino da Silva’s unresponsive body on Tuesday. It is suspected that he hanged himself with a bedsheet.
Officials told the Associated Press that da Silva, also known as “Shorty,” had attempted to escape the Gericinó prison on Saturday by swapping places with his visiting daughter.
Da Silva eventually gave himself away by reportedly acting suspiciously and displaying signs of nervousness.
After he was apprehended, he was transferred to a maximum-security prison. Meanwhile, eight people who were suspected of aiding his escape, including his daughter, have since been detained and are under investigation.
Rio’s State Secretary of Prison Administration released pictures on Sunday showing da Silva wearing his disguise — a long black wig, a silicone mask, a pink shirt, tight jeans, and sandals.
The Gericinó prison is located in the western part of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to law enforcement, da Silva is one of the leaders of Comando Vermelho, or the “Red Command,” one of Rio’s most prominent drug gangs. He was serving a 73-year jail sentence.
The investigation into da Silva’s death is still ongoing.
