WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Charisma Carpenter starred as Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the director’s alleged abuse of power occurred.
- Carpenter said actor Ray Fisher’s claims inspired her to come out with her own experiences of abuse from the director.
- She was allegedly subjected to repeated threats to be fired, fat calling while she was pregnant, among others.
Another actor comes forward to hurl allegations against director Joss Whedon after Ray Fisher last year. This time, it is Charisma Carpenter a.k.a Cordelia Chase on the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off series.
While working on Justice League in 2017, Fisher claimed that the director “was gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.” According to Fisher, there was an internal investigation done which finished in December 2020. At that time, a “remedial action has been taken” by WarnerMedia.
In a long statement, Carpenter said it was Fisher’s action which moved her to talk after nearly two decades.
The actress accused Whedon of abuse of power on the set, repeated threats to fire her from the series, “alienate” her from her coworkers, stressed her out while she was pregnant and for triggering trauma that caused her “chronic physical condition” that she is still suffering from to this day.
Carpenter alleged, “He was mean and biting, disparaging about others openly, and often played favorites, pitting people against one another to compete and vie for his attention and approval.”
During her pregnancy, she claimed that Whedon “callously” called her “fat” while she was pregnant. The director even scheduled late night shoots which jeopardize her health.
At that time, she could not speak about the alleged mistreatment as she felt she was alone in her struggle.
By coming forth with her story, the actress hopes to “create a space for healing.”
She wrote, “It has taken so long to muster the courage to make this statement publicly. The gravity of it is not lost on me. As a single mother whose family’s livelihood is dependent on my craft, I’m scared.”
Carpenter said she can no longer remain silent as it is time.”
As a response to Carpenter coming out, Fisher tweeted that Carpenter is one of the bravest people that he knows. “I am forever grateful for her courage and for her lending her voice to the Justice League investigation. Read her truth. Share her truth. Protect her at all costs.”
Carpenter also received support from another Buffy star, Amber Benson. In her tweet, Benson wrote, “Buffy was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. @AllCharisma is speaking truth and I support her 100%. There was a lot of damage done during that time and many of us are still processing it twenty plus years later. #IStandWithRayFisher#IStandWithCharismaCarpenter.”
Whedon still has to comment on Carpenter’s allegations.
