This week, a 21-year-old college athlete from Brigham Young University in Utah went viral after sharing a cringe-worthy video of his pole vault jump which went horribly wrong.
Zach McWhorter was practicing his stunts on pole vaulting Monday when he did not manage to stick to the landing he has originally hoped for. He posted on his TikTok profile the video clip showing the incident.
In it, he runs along the track with the pole in his hand, goes off from the ground for the leap, and while preparing to dismount, he accidentally impales his scrotum with the pole. The social media clip of McWhorter has been viewed almost 18.9 million times already since Friday.
McWhorter captioned the video clip he posted, “That one time the pole went through my nuts”, revealing along with it the 18 stitches he needed to get after the accident.
Buzzfeed has manage to interview the athlete about the horrible incident involving his genital area. McWhorter said he could “see right into [his] scrotum” after suffering the injury.
McWhorter also took a photo of the shorts he was wearing that day, showing a large hole where the pole pierced through his body. It just so happened that his pole vaulting coach, who is also his father, was a urologist and was able to assist him after the accident.
“Immediately after the incident, we got in his car and drove to the hospital and he sewed me up,” McWhorter said.
The athlete suffered minor damage to the scrotal region, but as far as he knows, there is nothing wrong with it.
“There is nothing wrong with my testicles — just a scar,” he said. “One day, we’ll find out if they function or not.”
