HERE’S THE SCOOP:

  • A bakery in California made a life-sized bread sculpture of Han Solo frozen in carbonite from Star Wars.
  • The sculpture, called “Pan Solo,” was made from two types of dough and wood and took weeks to complete.
  • It is now on display outside the bakery as part of the Downtown Benicia Main Street Scarecrow Contest.

A California bakery has created a unique sculpture of Han Solo from Star Wars using bread dough and wood. The life-sized sculpture, called “Pan Solo,” depicts the character as he appeared after being frozen in carbonite in the film The Empire Strikes Back.

The bakery, One House Bakery in Benicia, spent weeks molding and baking the dough, using two types of dough, including a type of yeastless dough with a higher sugar content to make it last longer.

Co-owners Hannalee and Catherine Pervan worked on the sculpture at night after the bakery closed, with Hannalee admitting she became obsessed with creating the perfect lips for the sculpture. Creating Pan Solo was particularly meaningful for Hannalee, who contracted COVID-19 earlier in the year and lost much of her senses of smell and taste.

“So just to find joy in a different part of food is really important,” she said.

The sculpture is now on display outside of the bakery as part of the Downtown Benicia Main Street Scarecrow Contest. Unfortunately, the dough used for the sculpture will eventually be composted, not eaten.
