Cardi B Interviews Joe Biden via Zoom [Video]

WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:

  • Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B expressed her views on a range of issues from free education, to racism in a candid conversation with Joe Biden via Zoom.
  • The Democratic presidential nominee stressed the importance of the youth voting in the elections.
  • Biden says that the change that people are clamoring for will come from this generation of least prejudiced and very socially engaged people.

For Elle Magazine’s September 2020 issue, Cardi B interviewed presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The questions ranged from the importance of the youth in the voting process, taxes, free education, healthcare, and racism in America.

On the importance of voting:

“The vote matters. That’s why you keep talking to people about the need to vote. Your generation can own what happens in the next election. They can change things dramatically if they show up and vote.”

On taxes and free education:

Cardi B asked, “When you see the taxes coming off your check, you don’t understand, because you feel like you’re putting in so many hours. People want to know, can you provide college education, this [health care] plan, without a big chunk of taxes coming out of our checks?”

Biden answered, “Yes, we can. And the way we can pay for all of this is doing practical things, like making sure that everybody has to pay their fair share. [For example] no corporation should pay less than 15 percent tax.

“If I get elected president, anybody with a family [that makes] less than 125 grand, you’re going to get free education. And everybody gets free community college.”

On racial prejudice:

Cardi B said: “Prejudice is dangerous. It could be the start of a civil war. It makes people feel uncomfortable around different people. Nobody wants to feel targeted. Nobody wants animosity. Everybody just wants the best for themselves, their future, their kids’ future.”

She said she fears for her 2-year old daughter and that Black people are just “asking for equality,” fairness, and justice. “That is all. I feel like everything people are asking for is getting interpreted in a very different way. No, it’s simple: We just want justice. We want to feel like Americans.”

To which Biden answered that he is sure that the change that Cardi B and her generation are looking for will come from her generation as, “You’re the smartest, the best educated, the least prejudiced, and the most engaged generation in history. And you’re going to change things.”

On delivering his campaign agendas: Biden promised, “Absolutely, positively.”
