- Jacop Robert Lee Hazlett was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, authorities said.
A South Carolina church volunteer was caught in a surveillance video performing a sex act on a 3-year-old boy on Sunday, according to authorities.
The pervert , Jacop Robert Lee Hazlett, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, South Carolina’s WCSC-TV reported. He was denied bond by a judge. The 28-year-old was a volunteer at NewSpring Church in North Charleston.
As per Charleston’s The Post and Courier report, Charleston Hazlett volunteered to supervise a group of kids, with ages 3 to 5, in “the Tree House” room.
Hazlett then escorted a boy to the church’s restroom. The media outlet reported that the volunteer performed oral sex on the 3-year-old boy, citing the affidavit. The molestation was caught on a surveillance camera placed outside the restroom, an investigator said.
The restroom’s door reportedly could have been open as there were no cameras inside the bathrooms, a church spokeswoman, Suzanne Swift, told the station.
In a statement, the church said it was made aware of the concern and possibility of Hazlett’s “inappropriate interaction with children.”
The church sent a letter to parents of preschool children who attend the North Charleston campus, the local station reported.
“NewSpring is steadfastly committed to safety and security, and because of this commitment, we have an extensive screening process for all adults before they are allowed to volunteer with children, birth through 12th grade,” the letter said.
If convicted, Hazlett faces a minimum of 25 years in prison and a maximum of a life sentence, The Post and Courier reported, adding that no probation or parole may be granted for the offense.
