WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A Florida father captured an image of a shark’s shadow swimming close to his children who were playing at the beach.
- Dan Watson usually only brings his drone along for work, but he decided to bring it that day at the beach.
- The incident remained an-almost encounter as Watson’s wife immediately took the kids out of the water after her husband spotted the shark.
When bringing a camera, maybe a drone, to a family outing, the intention is usually to capture some good fun photos of the occasion. That was just what Dan Watson, 35, planned when he went he took his drone with him to New Smyrna Beach on June 23.
The father from Florida just wanted to capture a few nice aerial shots of his three kids playing in the water. What he definitely didn’t plan on was seeing the unmistakable shadow of a huge shark that looked like it was making its way to the shore and to his kids.
Watson was using a Mavic 2 Pro drone during that beach trip. He is a photographer and videographer, posting camera reviews on his YouTube channel. He told Today that he usually makes use of the drone for work purposes only. It was pure luck that he decided to do something different that day.
Watson’s wife immediately ran to grab the kids out of the water after he yelled “Shark!”. The lifeguards had already gone off-duty for the day and the close call happened sometime around 5:30 pm. The kids, Grace, 9, Jonathan, 6, and Landon, 5, were quite shaken by the almost-encounter. Watson comments that he and his kids would probably be spending more time on the sandcastle building skills now.
The father didn’t know that he’d been able to capture an image. He shared the chilling photo on Instagram saying, “Definitely too close of an encounter for my liking!”
