WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A perverted doctor had been molesting his 8 to 12-year-old patients for almost twenty years while examining them in his room at various hospitals.
- Johnnie Barto pleaded guilty last December, to sexually molesting 31 kids and a newborn baby girl; he was sentenced to 158 years in prison on Monday.
- Barto’s pervy offenses date back to the 80s; he was charged over sexual claims but was dismissed by a majority vote by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine.
For almost two decades, a perverted and ‘wacko’ pediatrician used his body to block parents from seeing him abuse their kids while in his examination room.
Using his position of authority, Dr. Johnnie Barto sexually assaulted 31 youngsters, including his own family members and a two-week-old baby girl. Prosecutors say that his tactics also include waiting for parents to leave his office before carrying out his lecherous acts.
Last December, Barto, a former medic at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to molesting 31 girls and boys aged between 8 and 12, and a baby girl who was barely 2 weeks old. On Monday, he was sentenced to 79 to 158 years in jail, virtually guaranteeing that he will die behind bars, Attorney General Josh Shapiro said.
The Washington Post reports that Barto’s offenses go a long way back to the 1980s. He was charged with alleged abuse, but the charges were dismissed.
The 71-year-old was regarded as a ‘violent sexual predator’ after 19 people gave victim impact statements during the hearing at the Cambria County Courthouse. Many of the assaults were reported by prosecutors to have taken place in the examination room at Laurel Pediatric Associates of Cambria County and other local facilities.
Addressing the accusations against Barto, Laurel Pediatrics addressed a letter to parents saying, “While this is a very difficult time for all of us, please know that our first priority remains ensuring that your family continues to receive the very best care.”
Meanwhile, one of the victims in Barto’s case in 2000 is Lee Ann Berkebile, now 29. She was 4 years old when she was molested by the pediatrician.
As she expressed her relief on Barto’s upcoming sentence, she told The Associated Press: “After 20-some years, I’m just glad it’s finally over, and he can’t do it again. He’s a real sicko. He just makes me really disgusted.”
Back in 2000, Barto appeared before the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine on allegations of sexual assault on two girls in the 1990s.
At the time, a 7-2 vote by the board led to the case being dismissed, with them saying that the allegations were “incongruous to his reputation.”
Following the allegations, Barto received mass support from the local community. Once he got his license back, the pediatrician continued molesting more victims until he was arrested in January 2018.
