WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- TikTok users have recently been sharing how they discovered that the “moles” below their actual nipples turned out to be extra nipples.
- A doctor who saw these videos revealed that about one percent of humans develop extra nipples along the mammary line.
- However, there are extra rare cases in which nipples or even extra breast tissue were found in people’s feet.
The vast majority of humans have two nipples as the norm. But some people can have extra nipples that initially look like moles. Many TikTok users have shared their experiences on discovering that they have extra nipples, prompting a doctor to respond with information that there’s one strange place we had no idea could have a nipple.
Dr. Karan Rajan of the NHS said that most extra nipples appear on a person’s mammary line, which starts at the armpit and goes across the breast all the way down to the ends in the inner thigh.
This makes some people develop additional nipples below the usual ones in their chest, or in their armpits. He also explained in the comments that a mammary line is an embryonic remnant.
The doctor then revealed that some people can actually have nipples on their feet!
Referencing a medical paper from 2010, Dr. Rajan shared the story of a man who thought he had a mole growing on his foot. The “mole” turned out to actually be “a nipple and areola complex.”
There was also an earlier case in 2006 when a woman was found to have breast tissue in addition to a nipple on her foot.
“This is known as a pseudomamma, false breast,” Dr. Rajan explained. “When doctors removed this lump they even found ducts and sweat glands normally found in the breast. Although extra nipples and breast tissue normally appear on the mammary line, they can technically be anywhere.”
Dr. Rajan added that having extra nipples only occurs in about 1 percent of humans. Some of these extra nipples even produce milk!
In one case report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, doctors in Lisbon, Portugal examined a woman who noticed white liquid — breastmilk — coming out of her armpit.
Doctors found that the woman had a round, firm lymph node in her armpit that released white discharge when pressed. They concluded the condition to be polymastia, in which breast tissue develops along the ridge of the breast.
According to previous studies, the armpit is the most common place for women to develop accessory breast tissue.
