WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Marcy Flores ordered a two-tier cake from her local Walmart’s bakery in Pasadena, Texas for her daughter’s graduation.
- Unfortunately, when Flores went to pick up the cake and there was no order under her name, a store employee reportedly offered her the option to choose a ready-made cake for free.
- As they tried to cut into the cake, the knife crunched through a block of white styrofoam.
A family in Texas says their daughter’s graduation celebration was spoiled when they received a cake made of Styrofoam from Walmart.
Marsy Flores said the family was shocked to learn that the dessert was inedible.
“They can’t replace the moment that we lost,” a teary-eyed Flores told local TV station KPRC.
“This is my baby, and she was graduating, so it was very important to me,” she added.
According to the mother, on the morning of Lia’s graduation ceremony, she went to pick up the two-tier celebratory cake she pre-ordered from her local Walmart’s bakery but she was told by the store staff the order had been lost.
To make up for the mistake, Walmart reportedly offered Flores the option to choose a ready-made cake for free. Flores chose a smaller, single-layer blue-and-white frosted cake and was told that the Walmart bakers would be able to make some additional customizations including “a couple of graduation things … and her picture.”
But when it was time to cut into the cake that night to celebrate, they realized they’d been sold a frosted piece of Styrofoam.
“It’s a special moment, and this is what we got for it, a Styrofoam cake,” said Flores. “Not only did they mess up one time, they did it twice.”
Lia’s sister Nelly, who was able to film the incident, said she was in “complete shock” before they returned the fake cake to Walmart.
Walmart told KPRC the incident was a “misunderstanding” and has offered the family a $60 gift certificate for their inconvenience.
