This Florida neighborhood’s residents were both confused and amused on Thursday morning when they spotted a 2003 Mercury Sable going around in circles — with a dog on the driver seat.
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, the black Labrador Retriever named Max had accidentally knocked his owner’s parked car into reverse. He soon spent the next hour going on a crazy joyride as the car kept spinning around.
A local resident, Anne Sabol, told WPBF, “First I thought I saw somebody backing up, but then they kept going and I’m like, ‘Okay, what are they doing?’ The cops came, and I’m like ‘Okay.’”
According to the police statement, the car was first stopped by the dog’s owner. As he would only step away for a moment, he left his dog inside the vehicle. But Max accidentally hit the gear stick and the owner was locked out of his car.
The owner had an extra car fob but he still couldn’t unlock the door because it was out of batteries.
The police officers finally managed to intervene when the car slowed down. They then entered a code into the keypad of the driver-side door to unlock it.
Sabol told WPBF, “I saw this car going around in a circle and it was doing it for about an hour. And when the cops got the door open, a black dog jumped out, I was like, ‘They should give that thing a license.’”
Thankfully, the incident caused no major injuries. But the car itself sustained minor damage when it hit a mailbox, which the dog’s owner promised to replace.
According to authorities, Max was “fine, healthy, and happy” when he was retrieved. He must have gotten such a rush from that joyride!
