A middle school teacher from Florida faces 10-day suspension after she put hand sanitizer into one of her student’s open mouth.
Guyette Duhart, a science teacher at Polo Park Middle School in Wellington, was accused of pumping hand sanitizer inside the mouth of one of her students in October 2019, according to NBC affiliate WPTV in West Palm Beach.
The Palm Beach Post reported that Duhart admitted to holding a bottle of hand sanitizer to the mouth of her student who she said was talking too loudly in her science class, but denied pumping the bottle herself, saying that it was the student who squirted out the liquid sanitizer into his own mouth.
Duhart allegedly said, “You need to have your mouth washed with soap,” according to WPTV.
A number of students who claim to have witnessed the incident corroborate the student’s account of events.
The student spat out the sanitizer from his mouth and went to leave the classroom. He said that Duhart had allowed him to wash out his mouth when he returned to class.
Duhart details her side of events during the investigation process, “I was really unaware that anything occurred until he left”, she told the Post. “He returned to the class and I allowed him to wash out his mouth.”
The school district concluded that there is sufficient evidence to substantiate the complainant’s allegation towards the teacher. The Palm Beach County School Board approved on Wednesday a 10-day suspension without pay for Duhart.
The suspension is set to begin March 12, as per WPTV.
NBC News has tried to reach the school district and Duhart but to no avail.
