Former “Dancing with the Stars” choreographer Louis van Amstel is speaking out about a horrible incident his child experienced at school.
As a pre-Thanksgiving lesson, a Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills, Utah substitute teacher asked her class to share what they are grateful for.
When Van Amstel’s 11-year-old son, who’s identified as D.M., said he’s thankful that he is being adopted by his two dads, the teacher allegedly chastised him for having gay parents saying that “two men living together is a sin” then went on to lecture to the class about homosexuality being wrong.
The former pro dancer took to Twitter to vent his anger over the incident saying, “I’m disgusted that the bully is the teacher in a public school,” adding that his son was deeply hurt by his teacher’s words.
He also said that he’s proud of the three girls in the same class who bravely told the substitute teacher to stop, and when she didn’t, they reported her to the principal’s office. Later, as she was being escorted from the school, van Amstel said she continued to insist on her point.
“She also tried to blame our son and told him that it was his fault that she went off,” continued van Amstel. “It’s absolutely ridiculous and horrible what she did. We were livid. It’s 2019 and this is a public school.”
Van Amstel and his husband Joshua Lancaster found out about what happened after school officials notified them. He also praised the school for handling the matter well. “Not only did they let go of the teacher, they said this woman is never going to teach in this school ever again,” said van Amstel.
The Salt lake Tribune reported that the couple is expected to appear in court on December 19 to finalize their son’s adoption.
David Stephenson, spokesperson for the Utah school district told the news outlet “appropriate action has been taken.” He did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.
Meanwhile, the substitute teacher, who was subcontracted by the school district through staffing company Kelly Services, was sacked.
In a statement to PEOPLE on Sunday, a company representative said: “We’re] committed to having the best employees who care about all children in our schools, whether it be the teacher, the custodian, the secretary or a substitute teacher.” They also confirmed they ended the employee’s relationship with the company following an investigation.
Van Amstel and long-time boyfriend Joshua wed in 2017 in Sundance, Utah, where they currently reside.
