  • George Floyd and Derek Chauvin reportedly worked together at El Nuevo Rodeo Club in Minneapolis at the same time, said former coworker David Pinney.
  • Pinney said that the two knew each other and had a history of not getting along because of Chauvin’s aggressive behavior.
  • The previous club owner, Maya Santamaria, said that she thought Chauvin was “afraid and intimidated” of Black people.

New details have emerged regarding a possible connection between George Floyd and Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who is charged in Floyd’s death.

David Pinney, a former coworker of Floyd and Chauvin, told CBS News that the two worked security at El Nuevo Rodeo Club in Minneapolis at the same time. Pinney said that the two not only knew each other but also had a history of not getting along.

“They bumped heads,” Pinney told CBS News. “It has a lot to do with Derek being extremely aggressive within the club with some of the patrons, which was an issue.”

When CBS News asked Pinney if Chauvin undoubtedly knew Floyd, Pinney responded, “He knew him… pretty well.”

Floyd’s bereaved family members believe that the May 25 incident had been, in part, personal. Their lawyer also called for Chauvin’s charges to be escalated to first-degree murder, “because we believe he knew who George Floyd was.”

The club has since been torched amid the ongoing protests. The previous owner, Maya Santamaria, detailed Chauvin’s time at the club in CBS News‘ upcoming special “Justice for All.”

Santamaria said that Chauvin, when he was off-duty, was paid to sit in his squad car outside the club for 17 years. Meanwhile, Floyd worked as a security guard inside the club frequently in the last year.

She said that both worked on busy Tuesday nights, when the club hosted a popular weekly dance competition.

When asked if she thought Chauvin had a problem with Black people, Santamaria replied, “I think he was afraid and intimidated.”

The investigation on Floyd’s death is still ongoing.
