WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- After swimming at a Florida beach, a Kylei Parker, 12, started experiencing leg pains and swelling and fever.
- Doctors at the Riley Hospital later confirmed that Kylei had gotten herself infected with a lethal flesh-eating disease, also known as necrotizing fasciitis.
- It is also believed that the girl may have procured the infection when bacteria entered her body through a skateboarding toe wound.
A 12-year-old girl is reportedly recovering from a deadly flesh-eating disease, which she had apparently gotten from swimming at a beach in Florida.
Earlier this month, Kylei Parker and her family took a beach getaway at Destin, Florida. At the end of their vacation, Kylei began experiencing leg pains. Her leg was already swollen and she had a fever by the time they arrived in their home in Indiana.
Although Kylei’s mom, Michelle Brown first called the doctor to schedule for an appointment, she was told to take her daughter to the ER at Riley Hospital quickly.
Initially, doctors thought Kylei had a blood clot, however, Michelle said her “blood pressure was just continuously dropping.”
Doctors later confirmed that Kylei had developed necrotizing fasciitis. This refers to soft tissue getting decayed after bacteria enters the body and attacks skin and tissue. It is believed that the bacteria may have entered through a toe wound Kylei got from skateboarding a few days earlier and may have come from a Florida beach.
To stop the infection, Kylei had to undergo emergency surgery to stop the infection, save her leg and her life.
“If it wasn’t for their quick responses and aggressive treatments, we wouldn’t have her … It’s hard for me to think about if I had waited one more day, or even a couple more hours. We’re just very fortunate,” said Michelle.
Although she still has an IV port in her arm and her leg is still swathed in bandages, Kylei is now recovering at home after a week in the hospital. She is soon to start therapy to further heal her leg.
As for other parents, Michelle warns them not to let their children swim in the open sea with open wounds. She also added that now it’s quite hard for her to see family and friends enjoying themselves at the beach, “because we were there doing the same thing and I almost lost her.”
