WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Harry and Meghan borrowed £2.4 million to fund the renovation of their British residence.
- This became a major point of criticism as the money came from British taxpayers’ money.
- A spokesman announced on Monday that the couple paid back the money used for their cottage’s refurbishment.
On Monday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, announced that they’ve repaid the £2.4 million (about $3.16 million) that they used to refurbish their cottage located on the grounds of the Windsor Castle.
After the couple decided to resign as front-line royals earlier this year, the renovation of their British residence, Frogmore Cottage, became a main point of criticism. The criticisms came from those who accused them of wanting to keep the benefit of keeping their historic residence while escaping their royal duties.
The costs of renovation were covered by £2.4 million of British taxpayers’ money.
The couple previously promised to repay the money and Monday, a spokesman announced that they made a contribution that “fully covered the necessary renovation costs” of the residence. He continued to say that the cottage would “remain the U.K. residence of the Duke and his family.”
Since March, Harry and Meghan have been living in Los Angeles. Meghan made most of her wealth through her acting career long before she met the prince. Harry, on the other hand, has an estimated net worth of $40 million that comes mostly from inheritances from the queen, the queen-mother, and the late Princess Diana, his mother.
Though the 2018 wedding of the couple was heralded as a historic moment, they then shocked the world with their announcement this year of their decision to pursue a “revised role” and “a more independent life as a family” as they step back from their royal duties.
As the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, Harry is still sixth in line to the throne.
