WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein was tested positive with coronavirus while staying in state prison.
- It was still sketchy where Weinstein contracted the disease since he was also confined at a Manhattan hospital before his imprisonment.
- Weinstein was one of the two prisoners detained in Wende Correctional Facility currently under quarantine.
Infamous film executive, Harvey Weinstein, was infected with the coronavirus while in jail.
The case was confirmed just a few days after the convicted film producer was moved from Rikers Island in N.Y. to the Wende Correctional Facility.
The Deadline reported that Harvey is now in medical quarantine, as told by an official from the Empire State law enforcement.
When asked for confirmation, a spokesperson for the New York State Department of Corrections said that they’re not allowed to disclose information of an inmate’s medical account as per policy.
On Sunday, Weinstein’s P.R. head, Juda Engelmaye, also remarked that they hadn’t received any detail on the matter.
The 68-year-old Oscar-winning producer was transferred to Wende only by March 18. He was one of two inmates tested positive for the coronavirus on the maximum-security facility of Wende Correctional in the town of Alden in Erie County, New York.
As COVID-19 continues to spread across the U.S, the state of New York was among the most affected by the health crisis.
Moreover, no less than 43,000 prisoners of the state are considered to be at the high risk of contracting the disease. To date, around 40 convicts at Rikers have listed to be infected with COVID-2019, and the numbers were recorded since the past week, overlapping with Weinstein’s arrival in the NYC jail.
Currently, it is still unestablished if the former film producer got the virus while at the East River complex or during his hospital confinement in Manhattan only a few weeks ago.
The daily Niagara Gazette was the first to publish the report about Weinstein’s diagnosis.
The Pulp Fiction executive had earlier complained of chest pains upon his conviction, and stayed at the NYC’s Bellevue for six days and transferred to the North Infirmary Command at Rikers island facility. He stayed there up to the time where he was moved to Wende the previous week.
The recent development with the health condition of Weinstein is expected to complicate further the initial plans of an appeal to the New York case.
It was recalled that L.A. County D.A. Jackie Lacey, on January 6, during the opening of Weinstein’s N.Y. case trial, made it known that the convicted mogul is also to be extradited to face multiple sex crime charges in the west coast.
In May 2018, Weinstein was arrested in New York and primarily charged with two counts of predatory sexual assault. After submitting a not guilty plea in July 2018, Weinstein’s camp posted a bail of $5 million and was out by August under travel restrictions.
Weinstein bailed out the same month upon new charges against him are filed.
