Celestis Inc., a Houston-based company specializing in “memorial spaceflights,” is set to launch a “deep space time capsule” later this year, carrying the DNA of George Washington and other notable figures, along with the ashes of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and his wife, among others.
The mission, named “Enterprise” in tribute to the Roddenberry’s, will launch 150 capsules into space, including those of several Apollo astronauts and sci-fi figures such as James “Scotty” Doohan and Douglas Trumbull.
While the primary mission is to deliver a lunar lander to the Moon, the “Enterprise Flight” will continue on a heliocentric orbit around the sun, serving as a memorial to those onboard. “Perhaps awaiting discovery by a distant in time civilization,” says Celestis.
CEO Charles M. Chafer explains, “We’re very pleased to be fulfilling, with this mission, a promise I made to Majel Barrett Roddenberry in 1997 that one day we would fly her and husband Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry together on a deep space memorial spaceflight.”
The mission celebrates the intersection of science fact and fiction, bringing together space-bound firms and sci-fi fans in a fitting tribute to those who have contributed to our understanding of space and the universe.
