Tragic news has befallen the K-pop world as 28-year-old singer-actress Goo Hara was found dead on Sunday at her home in Seoul, South Korea.
The star, whose real name is Goo Ha-ra and is also known under the single name Hara, was a member of the five-part girl group Kara from 2008 to 2015. She then launched a solo music career and starred in several films and TV shows.
The cause of her death is still unclear. The authorities have not yet made an official report about her death, nor have they confirmed if it was suicide.
The star had a suicide attempt in March after an ex-boyfriend attempted to blackmail her with the release of a sex video and threats of assault. Hara’s agency had terminated her contract during the dispute.
She then signed a new contract in June. It was with leading talent management agency Production Ogi in Japan, where Kara enjoyed huge popularity. Under her new agency, Hara appeared on major fashion events and TV shows in Japan. On Nov. 13, she released a solo Japanese single entitled “Midnight Queen.”
It was just a month ago when the K-pop world mourned the singer-actress Sulli, who died by suicide. The outspoken star was often the target of cyber-bullying.
Hara was one of Sulli’s closest friends. Hara then had an Instagram live session in which she was seen in tears as she assured fans that she was okay and that she would keep working even harder.
The recent succession of deaths by suicide among young K-pop talents has put a spotlight on the industry, which has been seen as highly toxic. These deaths have been reported since the late 1990s, providing more concrete signs of the industry’s dark side behind the glamorous and shiny exterior.
Reports of sexual abuse also circulated. When actress Jang Ja-yeon died by suicide in 2009, she left a note claiming that she was sexually abused by powerful figures in the entertainment industry.
Several others continue to suffer depression as online critics continue to bash them on their appearances, personality, and private lifestyles.
