WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- According to a deposition from the lawsuit between Kesha and Dr. Luke, Katy Perry denied the allegations that the producer raped her.
- Luke’s legal team accuses Kesha of spreading the rumor through messages with Lady Gaga, while Kesha denies making such claims.
- Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson declares that Dr. Luke indeed has a reputation for being sleazy and demeaning.
A deposition unsealed Monday reveals Katy Perry has denied she was raped by Dr. Luke, an allegation that was made public as part of Dr. Luke’s defamation suit against Kesha, who accused him of raping her.
The producer’s legal team has accused Kesha of spreading the rumor that he raped Katy Perry.
Meanwhile, Kesha denied making such claims.
Kesha’s attorneys stated, “…Kesha has never claimed to have any independent knowledge of any alleged assault of Katy Perry… But, to be clear, Dr. Luke is suing Kesha based on a private, one-on-one text message that Kesha sent Lady Gaga in 2016, shortly after Interscope CEO John Janick told Kesha and Lady Gaga he’d heard a rumor that Dr. Luke had also abused Katy Perry.”
Gaga confirmed Janick’s statement in her deposition, which stated, “He said he had heard a rumor. … I don’t recall exactly the way he said it. … He said something like I heard [Dr. Luke] raped Katy [Perry], too.”
In a statement to PEOPLE, Dr. Luke’s team pointed out, “Katy Perry herself confirmed that Dr. Luke did not rape her. Kesha’s accusation to the contrary — just like her other outrageous lies about Dr. Luke – is baseless and irresponsible, and it is disrespectful to both Katy Perry and Dr. Luke.”
Meanwhile, another pop star, Kelly Clarkson, spoke out against Dr. Luke in her own deposition, which stated that the producer can be “a bully and demeaning.”
She added, “In general, I don’t know anyone that likes him. … People have said he is sleazy. People have said he is belittling… I don’t like him as a person.”
This bitter legal battle between Kesha and Dr. Luke started in 2014 when Kesha sued her former mentor with allegations that he drugged and raped her, in addition to verbally and emotionally abusing her for a decade.
Dr. Luke vehemently denied the claims and countersued Kesha for defamation and breach of contract. He then tweeted in February 2016: “I didn’t rape Kesha and I have never had sex with her. Kesha and I were friends for many years and she was like my little sister.”
Although a judge has already dismissed Kesha’s abuse claims in 2016, the lawsuit rages on.
