The popular Keto diet has a smelly side effect — the ‘Keto Crotch’

The Keto diet allows you to eat steaks, fried eggs and bacon smothered in cheese at breakfast. Sounds heavenly, right? But its side effect, users called the ‘Keto Crotch’ is way far from being described as heavenly.

The keto diet, short for ketogenic, is a low-carb diet plan that focuses on eating high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate meals. It also allows dieters to eat a few fruits and starchy vegetables.

The diet has become very popular, even celebrities like Halle Berry and Tim Tebow swear by its effectiveness. Diehard followers of the Keto diet say it’s a delicious way to lose weight fast. Critics, however, argue that it may not prove sustainable for the average person.

Keto diet followers say its worst side effect is what’s called the “Keto Breath.” The smell is described as overripe-to-rotten fruity or metallic (like “fingernail polish remover“).

But, Keto dieters recently reveal that there may be an, even more, worse odor the diet brings. The condition is called the ‘Keto Crotch’ by online keto-followers. The smelly side effect is a hot topic on medical message boards, Twitter and Reddit threads.

“I am very, SMELLY,” one Reddit user shared.

“Have any of you tried vegetarian keto and found a reduction in your funk factor, specifically below the belt?” another Reddit commenter asked.

Meanwhile, someone advised: “It took me a couple months to ‘level out,’” referring to her intimate area odor.

Registered dietitian and nutritionist Lisa De Fazio agreed and told Insider, “Foods change the pH of the body. When this happens, the body will emit certain odors.”

“The keto diet [may] change your vaginal pH, which alters your vaginal odor — and it may not smell like roses,” she continued.

The imbalance may also cause women to have infections like bacterial vaginosis, De Fazio added. A visit to a doctor may be helpful, “Or, just change your diet,” she says.
