WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Kobe Bryant will be given a public memorial at his LA Laker’s home, Staples Center Arena, on 2/24.
- The commemorative event is also to give honor to all whose lives were claimed by the helicopter crash, including Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, other passengers, and the pilot.
- NBA 2020 All-Star Games will also be dedicated to Kobe’s life, career, and contribution to the world of basketball.
Los Angeles is set to pay tribute to LA Laker’s future Hall of Famer, Kobe Bryant, in a public memorial at the Staples Center Arena on February 24. Los Angeles Times wrote that the event is also for all the victims that perished on a helicopter crash in January this year.
No one survived the accident that happened on January 26 — with Kobe, his daughter Gianna, and seven others, including the pilot. The initial reports point to weather conditions as the possible reason for the accident, although the investigation continues.
The date Feb. 24, or 2/24, is also symbolic both for Kobe and his teenage daughter, Gianna. Gigi, who was only 13 years old, wore jersey No.2 on the Harbor Day School’s women basketball team. Kobe wore jersey No. 24 in the last half of his career.
Immediately after the crash, NBA players, teams, and fans have nonchalantly gathered together to grieve for Bryant’s death. In honor of the deceased NBA superstar, teams intentionally committed symbolic penalties, players temporarily wore jerseys No. 24 and 8, and several fans assembled outside Staples Center to build an improvised memorial.
The makeshift memorial was no longer outside Staples Center, and all items went to Kobe’s wife, Vannesa Bryant, as per her request.
The 2020 NBA All-Star Game is also dedicated in memory of the Black Mamba, Kobe’s monicker, who’s one of the greatest players who ever graced the basketball court.
This year’s All-Star Game will commence before Kobe’s public memorial date. The game itself is a tribute to Kobe since a particular set of rules will apply, using Bryant’s No. 24 as the score goal in the All-Star Game.
The leading team’s score at the end of the third quarter will be added with 24 points, and that shall be the basis of both teams to target. Any team that reaches the target score first wins the 2020 All-Star Games.
A few days after the opening of the All-Star Games, all the public memorial events at Staples Center will also give tribute to John, Keri, and Alyssa Altobelli, whose lives were lost because of the crash. Orange Coast College lost a long-time baseball coach, John, while Alyssa was a teammate of Gianna in a basketball team.
