The Los Angeles Lakers have recently launched an investigation into All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins. According to several reports, Cousins allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend’s life if she did not let their 7-year-old son attend his wedding to Morgan Lang this past weekend.
The Lakers told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk: “We are aware of the allegation involving DeMarcus Cousins and, of course, take this claim seriously. We are in the process of gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time.”
Christy West filed a police report claiming that Cousins threatened her on Friday, the day before his wedding. TMZ Sports reportedly obtained the court documents and published the audio of the alleged exchange:
In the recording, a voice presumed to be Cousins asked West: “I’m gonna ask you this one more time before I take it to another level: Can I have my son here?”
West replied, “Go shoot the ball.” Cousins asked again: “Can I have my son here, please?”
When West replied, “No, he’s not coming,” Cousins responded with the alleged threat: “I’m gonna make sure I put a bullet through your f—ing head.”
It is still unclear whether it was indeed Cousins’ voice in the recording, or if he was being literal with West.
Some may find the recording similar to that of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill. In that April recording, Hill can be heard telling his son’s mother, “You need to be terrified of me, too, b—-.” But Hill did not receive a suspension from the NFL.
The NBA, meanwhile, is expected to take this claim seriously and issue the appropriate actions.
Cousins had just signed a one-year deal with the Lakers this July. But he is set to miss the entire 2019-20 season after he tore his ACL during a workout earlier this month.
