WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A man headed to Minnesota was captured on camera lighting up a cigarette while aboard a Spirit Airlines flight on May 21.
- A shocked passenger called an attendant who said: “You cannot smoke on airplanes. It’s against the law.”
- The man put out the cigarette without any incident but was apprehended by the police upon landing.
A viral video from a Spirit Airlines flight to Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 21, shows a passenger lit up a cigarette and broke one of the cardinal rules of air travel.
The footage was recorded by a fellow passenger who captured an obviously intoxicated man wearing a dark tee shirt and khaki shorts light up and take a puff. He them seemingly dozed off after lowering the cigarette to his lap.
The video also captured another passenger sitting across the aisle flagging down a flight attendant, who immediately wakes the passenger up and tell him that smoking on a flight is against the law.
The smoking passenger appears surprised, saying “oh my God,” as the flight attendant requests for his boarding pass.
The unidentified passenger who filmed the shocking video said she noticed the man was intoxicated from the moment she saw him boarded the plane at 8:30 a.m.
“This man was in my seat, and I thought he might be inebriated,” she wrote on social media. “Once everyone boarded the plane I got in my assigned seat and realized his seat was next to mine. I breathed in deeply, but told myself that I wouldn’t be that person to treat him differently.”
The woman said the man moved over after noticing the aisle seat next to him was empty. She said she was relieved, until after takeoff.
“Throughout the flight, I could hear him making loud outbursts. Roughly 40 minutes before we landed, he laid across the two seats with his butt towards me,” she explained. “He continued his loud outbursts and began aggressively flipping the tray open and closed, then he sat up. I saw him take the cigarettes and lighter out of his pocket. I pulled out my phone and started to record as he lit the cigarette.”
The woman added that as soon as the plane landed, airport police removed him from the plane. It is still undetermined if any charges were filed against him.
