Gholamreza Ardeshiri, a 58-year-old Iranian man, has survived on sweetened fizzy drinks alone for the past 17 years, claiming the mere sight of food makes him nauseous.
Ardeshiri’s unique dietary regimen began in 2006, when he woke up with an inexplicable sensation in his mouth, akin to a hair tugging from his stomach through his throat.
Despite consultations with various doctors and psychiatrists, Ardeshiri couldn’t rid himself of this strange feeling.
Eventually, he made a decision that would change his life – he stopped eating food altogether, subsisting solely on carbonated beverages like Pepsi and Coca-Cola.
Ardeshiri drinks three large bottles of soda per day, insists he never feels hunger, and says he derives all his energy from these drinks.
His family refrains from eating in his presence to avoid triggering his nausea.
“I had a strange feeling…I felt like an object like hair was inside my mouth…it was not possible to remove this hair,” Ardeshiri recounted.
Unable to find a resolution for his peculiar condition, he chose to eliminate food from his life entirely.
Although the switch to an exclusively soda-based diet might seem concerning from a health perspective, Ardeshiri claims he’s been thriving.
He lost approximately 32 kilograms (roughly 70 pounds) since his diet change and asserts he hasn’t experienced any serious health problems in the past 17 years.
Ardeshiri is well aware of the health risks associated with consuming large amounts of sugar-rich fizzy drinks, but he maintains that his regular health checks, including an endoscopy, have affirmed his overall health.
Apart from sodas, he drinks only half a glass of water and maybe a glass of tea every week.
The Iranian man now reports feeling more energized than ever before, sleeping just four hours a night and spending his free time watching TV and solving puzzles.
