WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- The man who staged a protest against drag queens entertaining kids at a story reading event in Brisbane, killed himself on Monday, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) confirmed.
- Wilson Gavin, head of The Liberal National Club, was seen in a viral clip of the protest interrupting the event and yelling at the event participants.
- The demonstration elicited outrage from the public especially mothers who told news outlets that the club members’ actions scared their children so much.
The Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported that the man who staged and led a protest against drag queens spending time with a group of children, committed suicide.
The Liberal-National Club’s president, Wilson Gavin, was reported to have ended his life on Monday morning after a video of him spearheading a protest on Sunday at a kids’ event held at the Brisbane Square Library, spread on the internet like wildfire.
Last Sunday, two drag queens participated in the storytelling event where they read stories to youngsters and sang songs with them. Gavin, together with fellow club members, gatecrashed the venue shouting, “Drag queens are not for kids!”
People at the event took to social media to share the incident. ‘The Veronicas’ singer Jessica Origliasso who was said to be at the event with a friend and her daughter, wrote on Instagram that during the storytelling, a screaming group who called themselves the UQ young Libs barged in “causing chaos and distress to children and everybody there.”
She added saying: “What they did today was add to the bigotry, division and trauma young children are left to face in today’s society.”
A mother from Brisbane, Jenny Griffith, also told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that her children were shocked and frightened by the protest.
ABC revealed that the protest sparked so much public outrage and criticism that the club had to defend itself on its Facebook page.
It wrote: “Today the UQLNC took a stand to defend [Liberal National Party] values against a corrosive gender ideology. After a ratepayer-funded Drag Queen Story Hour finished this Sunday, we decided to make a public demonstration against the Brisbane City Council endorsing it.”
The Liberal National Party is one of the oldest conservative organizations in the country. The Times reported that it had since dissociated itself from the rally as well as canceled its affiliation with the club since December.
Gavin, who was gay, was remembered by his friend Drew Pavlou on Facebook on Monday.
“Away from the social media storms and headlines, he was at his core a very decent and kind person that cared for others. He had his struggles and made mistakes, and it is a tragedy for us all that he ultimately succumbed to his suffering and pain.”
