- The incident left Turan a fractured cheek when one of the attackers shoved his face into a scaffolding pole.
Authorities are investigating a claim by a New Jersey man that almost two dozen people in New York attacked him for wearing a pro-Trump “Make America Great Again” or MAGA hat.
Jahangir Turan told reporters Thursday that the alleged attack occurred after he had just finished work around 6:30 p.m. He claims a group of 18 to 20 people on Canal Street who were chanting anti-Trump words like “f— Trump” waylaid told him “f— you” because of his MAGA hat. He said one female flicked his hat while another male pushed him into a scaffolding pole.
“I went that day to Trump Plaza to buy the hat to put on my TV and I wore it just to take it home,” said Turan adding that he hadn’t planned on wearing the hat in New York City because he thinks it’s not safe to wear something like that in New York City.
Although he didn’t get a good look at his attackers, Hoboken resident Turan, assumed that they were all about 18 years of age.
While details surrounding the incident remain murky, a spokesperson from NYPD in an email on Friday confirmed to Fox News that an assault case investigation on a 35-year-old victim that transpired at around 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday at Canal Street is being carried out.
According to police, the victim said he sustained a cheek fracture when his face was thrust into a scaffolding pole and was also punched in the head.
Turan initially refused medical attention at the scene, said the NYPD. However, he said that when his condition became worse overnight, he decided to go to the hospital the next day.
As of Friday, the investigation was still ongoing and police have not so far obtained a clearer description of Turan’s attackers.
