WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- After beating Adrien Broner last Saturday, Manny Pacquiao appeared to be ready for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
- But a medical scare could put those plans on hold after PacMan complained of pain and vision loss in his left eye Sunday morning.
- Pacquiao’s entire boxing career is on the line if he is indeed diagnosed with a detached retina.
Manny Pacquiao easily dispatched Adrien Broner on Saturday’s match in Las Vegas, retaining his title and making it possible for the veteran boxer to ask for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
However, a future match with Mayweather may be put on hold. The New York Daily News’ Wallace Matthews reported that the champion has complained of pain and vision loss in his left eye on Sunday morning.
Some members of Pacquiao’s camp fear that PacMan might have suffered a detached retina. He is reportedly set to fly back to the Philippines to see an eye specialist.
But other members of Team Pacquiao said that the injury was only a minor corneal scratch which he got from the tape on Broner’s gloves, also according to Matthews.
If the diagnosis is a detached retina, it will not only derail a potential future fight against Money Mayweather but Pacquiao’s whole boxing career.
Last Saturday’s victory made the Filipino boxer’s record to 61-7-2, proving that at 40 years old, he still had a little left in the tank.
After the shocking development, Pacquiao’s camp found out that his Los Angeles home, which was left empty during the fight, had been robbed. A safe reportedly containing thousands in cash and jewelry had been ransacked. Authorities responded to an apparent break-in Saturday night when they noticed the door was left open because Pacquiao’s entourage left it empty during the match.
UPDATE: On Monday, Pacquiao’s spokesman said that PacMan “is fine” after a report circulated that his eye injury could be career-threatening, according to The Los Angeles Times.
The news report says the veteran boxer has removed his eye patch. Video clips on Instagram show Manny Pacquiao attending Monday’s NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers with his wife and daughter. PacMan and Mayweather, who also watched the game, even greeted each other.
