WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Social media mogul Mark Zuckerberg has overtaken billionaire Warren Buffett on Friday to be the world’s third richest person alive.
- According to Bloomberg’s calculations, the Facebook CEO has a net worth of $81.6 billion.
- The top three richest people alive—Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Zuckerberg, in that order—are all tech moguls.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now the third richest man on the planet having a fortune of $81.6 billion. He jumped past business magnate Warren Buffett who is now number four.
According to the Bloomberg index, the world’s richest person on Earth is Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, with a net worth of about $141 billion, followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates with $94.2 billion.
Zuckerberg is richer than Buffet by about $373 million. Legendary investor Warren Buffett was once the richest person on the list but because of his worthy causes, donating billions of dollars to charity every year, he slipped to number four. He reportedly has given away $46 billion—that’s 71% of his wealth—to charity since the year 2000.
The Facebook CEO placed third on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index because shares of the social media platform rose 2.4%.
It is the first time that the top 3 richest persons are all from the tech world.
Tech stocks are doing good this year—Netflix (NFLX) has more than doubled, Amazon (AMZN) has surged 46%, Apple (AAPL) is up about 11%, and Google (GOOG) has gained 9%, as reported by CNN Money.
Buffett is entering the tech world, too. Berkshire Hathaway purchased nearly 75 million shares of Apple stock early this year. That’s on top of the 165 million shares it already had.
However, the move was considered relatively late. The Berkshire Hathaway CEO didn’t report his initial purchase of Apple shares until two years ago. Currently, Apple is one of Berkshire’s largest holdings.
In 2015, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife made a pledge to give away 99% of their Facebook shares “during their lives” to charitable purposes.
