Indiana mom sends letter to Notre Dame begging young women to stop wearing leggings

WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:

  • An Indiana mother’s letter to the Notre Dame student newspaper voicing her concern about young women wearing leggings becomes viral.
  • A lot of women reacted negatively to the letter saying that they should not be responsible for any man’s action.
  • In protest, Notre Dame female students hosted a “leggings day” on March 26.

A mother from Indiana sparked outrage after she sent a letter to Notre Dame’s newspaper begging young women to stop wearing leggings over fears they corrupt ‘nice guys’ like her four sons.

Maryann White wrote the letter after seeing a group of young women wearing black leggings during Mass at Notre Dame Catholic University in South Bend, Indiana. White’s letter was published in the Notre Dame-Saint Mary’s Catholic Observer.

She wrote that the offending pant wearers who were attending mass ‘truly looked as though the leggings had been painted on them,’ adding the sight of the leggings had ‘obtruded painfully on my landscape.’

The mom said that her sons knew better not to stare at the women’s ‘blackly naked rear ends.’

White believes that wearing the garment was an act of selfishness, writing: “I’m fretting both because of unsavory guys who are looking at you creepily and nice guys who are doing everything to avoid looking at you.

“For the Catholic mothers who want to find a blanket to lovingly cover your nakedness and protect you — and to find scarves to tie over the eyes of their sons to protect them from you!

“Leggings are so naked, so form-fitting, so exposing.”

White urged young women to “think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead?”

This mom’s stance on leggings sparked a huge backlash. Notre Dame students staged a protest on March 26 calling it “Love Your Leggings Day.” Over 1000 female students wear their leggings to class that week in protest.

A Facebook page was set up to promote the protest where women openly slammed White’s letter. The page said that White’s letter is one way of blaming women for “making” men attack them and that “what you wear is completely your own choice!”
