WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A mother’s claims of being kidnapped with her child have come apart when her child was eventually found alive in a steep ravine in a remote area.
- Charged with attempted first-degree murder, Krista Noelle Madden, 35, is believed by authorities to have tossed her 7-month old baby down a deep gorge.
- County Sheriff Lowell Griffin says that the infant’s surviving the 75-foot fall is simply a miracle.
A mother who is believed to have cooked up a story that her baby was kidnapped was later suspected of throwing her child down a deep ravine after the baby was found alive.
Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin said that Krista Noelle Madden, 35, is now jailed for one account of attempted first-degree murder after 7-week-old Shaylie was found by residents at the bottom of a 75-foot ravine.
Investigators have surmised that the baby was still strapped in her car seat when she was thrown then rolled out of it upon landing on the ground.
“In my opinion, the baby simply survived ‘by the grace of a merciful God’”, said Griffin who added that although the baby was admitted to the hospital, she is said to be in good condition.
A 911 call was received on Thursday by Asheville police who reported a kidnapped mother and child from Biltmore Park. They confirmed that Madden didn’t place the call after pinging her phone and locating it to neighboring Henderson County.
At 5:30 p.m., Henderson County investigators responded to a call from a resident who ran into Madden near a church on a rural road. The sheriff’s deputies found Madden and her abandoned car later at a shorter distance away.
Reportedly, Madden told the county authorities that she just escaped her supposed kidnappers which according to Asheville police were a thin-built man and a woman wearing ski masks. Though a search was launched, authorities didn’t find the child.
Then, Henderson County investigators received another 911 call before 8 pm from a couple who, according to the audio call, told the dispatcher that they found a crying and very scared baby girl down the steep ravine near their home and with her car seat nearby.
“There are no people down here. We’re in a remote area. Somebody must have pulled up beside and tossed her like a piece of trash,” said the caller who also confirmed that the infant’s head was “banged up” and has a leg wound.
When asked about Madden’s claims of Shaylie being kidnapped, Griffin said, “at this point, we don’t believe any of that to be factual.” Based on evidence and interviews, he concludes that Madden had flung her baby over the ravine and is likely to have acted alone.
According to TV station WYFF, Madden appeared in court Friday for a short bond hearing and gave up her right to a court-appointed attorney. She is set to be back in court on May 28.
