Mother threatens to shoot up elementary school in Florida after her children were rezoned

August 15, 2019 by Nena Serrano 1 Comment

WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:

  • The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Florida woman after she allegedly threatened to shoot up an elementary school in Lake Worth Beach.
  • Miranda Perez, 28, was charged with sending a written threat to commit bodily injury following a disturbing message she sent a friend over Facebook Messenger on Sunday.
  • Perez allegedly wrote on Facebook Messenger, “I’m thinking of doing a school shooting at Barton,” after her local school district rezoned her children.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Florida mother after she allegedly threatened to shoot up an elementary school in Lake Worth Beach, where her children were being moved to, according to NBC-affiliated television station WPTV.

Miranda Perez, 28, was charged with sending a threat to commit bodily injury after a disturbing conversation she allegedly had with a friend over Facebook Messenger on Sunday.

The Palm Beach County mother told the friend in a video chat that she would “Facebook friend Zachary Cruz because she likes ‘violent things,'” according to Perez’ arrest report. Zachary is the brother of Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz, who carried out an attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 2018.

Perez then allegedly wrote on Facebook Messenger, “I’m thinking of doing a school shooting at Barton” after the video chat.

The root of Perez’ ire stemmed from the fact that her local school district rezoned her kids to Barton Elementary School.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detectives, Perez admitted to making the threat but “claimed she would never actually do it.” She is currently being held on bond.

“This is a great example of the importance of bringing forward information about things you see on social media,” said Frank Kitzerow, chief of Palm Beach County School District Police.

Perez’ arrest comes in the wake of two mass shootings that happened less than two weeks ago in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. A combined total of 31 people were killed in the two shootings which occurred less than 24 hours apart.
