University of Rochester Medical Center officials announced that one man failed to disclose coronavirus-related symptoms to the hospital to be able to visit his wife in the maternity ward, giving birth. The incident was only confirmed on Tuesday after the wife has been put under surveillance, experiencing symptoms of the virus.
The Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester has tracked patients and hospital staff who have had probable contact with the couple following the incident inside the maternity ward the previous week. The hospital officials and medical staff have confirmed that the husband was symptomatic during the time of his visit to the hospital.
“The couple and their baby were asked to quarantine, pending testing results, to protect the community and were discharged from the hospital,” as per the official statement released by the hospital.
The person to person contact with the couple was limited, confined inside the in a private room throughout the delivery, but the hospital continues to monitor staff members for symptoms of COVID-19 with body temperatures checked two times a day.
To date, only one developed coronavirus-related symptoms and was quarantined at home from the hospital staff under monitoring after the incident. The test results came back negative for the coronavirus, maintaining the record that none of the staff members have tested positive for the virus.
Per Democrat and Chronicle, patient information that would confirm whether the father, the mother or the baby had tested positive for coronavirus remain sealed under the protection of the privacy laws. The spokesperson for the hospital told the news outlet that the hospital does not speculate why the husband opted not to disclose his health condition.
Strong Memorial Hospital bars entry of those without masks following newly adjusted visitor restrictions and patient care protocols to “maximize safety for patients and staff” after the breach in safety guidelines.
The hospital safety guidelines were updated over the weekend under the directive of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Partners can go inside the delivery room so that pregnant women would not have to give birth alone.
