President Of Liberia Evacuated From Office Due To Venomous Snakes Infestation

  • The President of Liberia George Weah has been advised to evacuate his office due to a possible infestation of poisonous snakes.
  • After a couple of venomous black snakes were spotted at the Liberian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Weah was immediately evacuated and was told to stay away from the office until it’s safe.
  • Black snakes’ toxins are deadly just like the black mamba — one of the most poisonous snakes in the world.

There are a lot of places around the world where there are snakes that carry enough toxin to kill a human in a single bite. One of these places is Liberia.

In fact, there are at least a dozen species of poisonous snake native to this country, according to the website TLC Africa. The website added that any of these snakes can kill humans. That’s why when security spotted two black snakes in the Liberian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they evacuated President George Weah.

The Liberian ruler was advised not to come back for at least two days while they got the place secured.

President Weah holds office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs because the official Presidential palace was destroyed in 2006, when Liberia was ‘horrifically corrupt and desperately poor.’ It was impossible to build an official residence for the president.

Due to the snakes’ sightings, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also been placed off-limits for at least a few days.

Deputy press secretary Smith Toby told the BBC that the Liberian leader had been advised to keep away from the building where two black snakes were spotted. Black snakes are as dangerous as the black mamba — one of the most venomous snakes on the planet.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts the office of the president, so it did an internal memo asking the staff to stay home while they do the fumigation,” Toby said. “That building’s been there for years now, and [because of] the drainage system, the possibility of having things crawling in that building was high.”

Weah was elected President of Liberia in 2018. He’s a former international soccer player and was even awarded FIFA’s player of the year in 1995.
