WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Sara Geurts, 28, has extremely saggy skin despite her age because of a disease called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS).
- She is a body-positive model and advocates for diversity inclusion in the modeling industry.
- Health issues have kept her bound to her bed for the past year and she hopes that she will be able to get funding to help with her health and continue her goal of championing body positivity.
Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder where the body lacks collagen. Most of the symptoms of the disease aren’t visible- fatigue, digestive problems, joint hypermobility and pain, and loose skin.
Sara Geurts of Minnesota, 28, has an even rarer form of the disease, Dermatosparaxis EDS, which causes her skin to sag excessively. At age 6 or 7, her loose skin was a cool oddity among kids. Then she was diagnosed somewhere between ages 8 and 10. When she was a teenager, her saggy skin was a source of extreme self-consciousness, making her hide behind jeans and sweaters.
“I just wanted to cover it up,” she said.
Her twenties was an entirely different story though. Sara realized how trying to cover herself up was very toxic. She started loving her body and gained the confidence to show off her skin.
“Now it’s just a complete 360, it’s like I am who I am, my disorder is a part of me but I’m not my disorder. And I love my body.”
Sara speaks openly about her condition and has become a body positive influencer with more than 76,000 followers on Instagram. However, she’s recently been battling medical issues and has spent nearly the past year bedbound and unable to eat.
Through GoFundMe, Sara hopes to get enough funds to help her achieve her new mission: get the medical treatment she needs so she can continue to make waves in the modeling industry and champion greater representation. She’s been able to see a specialist in Minneapolis because of the donations to the page.
Still, there’s quite a way to go. Sara will be needing further tests and will need to find more specialists. She and her girlfriend, Bri Berglund, who does photo shoots for Sara’s Instagram, plan to use the funds to move to also LA. It is the couple’s hope that the warmer climate will be beneficial for Sara’s health and that the new location will also be good for their careers.
