WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by an Atlanta police officer on Friday night just several hours after he took his 8-year-old daughter to the arcade to celebrate her birthday.
- Police body and dashboard cameras captured the 27-year-old who was shot dead as he attempted to flee after failing the Breathalyzer test and resisting arrest.
- The officer who shot Brooks has been fired, the other one on administrative leave while the Atlanta Police Chief has resigned as waves of protests rage in the city.
Police Officers’ body and dashboard cameras capture how Rayshard Brooks was pulled over into a parking spot, the ensuing scuffle, Brooks’ grabbing a Taser and running with it, to his fatal shooting.
It did not show that hours before his death, Brooks celebrated his 8-year old daughter Blessing’s birthday.
Brooks took her daughter to the arcade and got her nails done and ate out.
When he was pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving, he failed the Breathalyzer test. Everything that happened thereafter and the eventual fatal shooting were all recorded on camera.
Brooks died later in the hospital from his injuries.
The Brooks case sparked widespread protests in Atlanta and even led to a burning of the Wendy’s near the area where the arrest and shooting happened. It also came after worldwide protests for the death of George Floyd under the hands of the Minnesota police are still raging.
The officer involved in the shooting has now been fired, the other is on administrative leave, and the Atlanta Police Chief has resigned.
His widow, Tomika Miller, recalls that Brooks was a great father who loved his family and said that the officers did not have to be aggressive. She now blames the police for destroying her family.
L. Chris Stewart, one of the attorneys for the family said, “We sat with [Brooks’ children] today and watched them play and laugh and be oblivious to the facts that their dad was murdered on camera.”
A GoFundMe page created for the family has now raised more than $63,000.
Charges against the officers are still to be filed by The Fulton County District Attorney.
