Restaurant in China collapses leaving 29 dead

  • A restaurant in a northern China village collapsed on Saturday during a birthday celebration.
  • The incident caused the death of 29 people, leaving 28 more injured.
  • The cause of the building’s sudden collapse is unclear and the Cabinet’s Work Safety Commission will be overseeing the investigation.

A restaurant in Xiangfen county, northern Shanxi province in China collapsed during a village resident’s 80th birthday party on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, the collapse left 29 people dead, and though a total of 57 were rescued from the rubble and brought out alive, 28 of them were injured, seven of them sustaining serious injuries.

Hundreds of rescue workers armed with sniffer dogs, high-tech sensors, and cranes searched through the rubble of the building in hopes of finding survivors. However, authorities said the rescue efforts were called off on Sunday. The ministry said there was no immediate word on the fate of the birthday celebrants and other guests.

The cause of the building collapse in the northern China village around 9:40 am on Saturday is unknown. A report from the official China Daily newspaper said that the Cabinet’s Work Safety Commission would oversee the investigation into the cause of the accident.

Though many major improvements have been made regarding China’s industrial safety, sometimes building standards are ignored. This is a more common occurrence in rural areas, such as the Xiangfen county in Shanxi province, where the incident occurred. The county lies about 400 miles southwest of Beijing.

Also, the region is located in the middle of China’s coal country. Over the past years, thousands of miners died there due to different accidents such as collapses, explosions, and floods.
